I signed a contract with Home Instead which stipulated that I was responsible for any amounts not covered by my Long Term Care Insurance (covering my parents). When my dad was dying in the hospital, a representative of Home Instead assured me repeatedly to allow the caregiver remain with my dad in the hospital and not worry about the cost. I took him at his word. BIG MISTAKE!!! I learned the hard way. Long story short. Since I had signed a contract, I was pursued by Home Instead for the amounts due in excess of the coverage provided by the LTC insurance policy. I ended up settling with Home Instead for an agreed upon amount.
My beef is that they took advantage of the fact that I was naive about this business and vulnerable during a personal crisis in my family. On numerous phone calls with the company representative, I was encouraged "not to worry" do whatever is necessary for your dad. In retrospect, I realize that not getting this reassurance in writing was foolish on my part. Anyway, while not illegal to behave in this regard it is reprehensible nonetheless and that is all I wish to point out. The individual(s) who own(ed) this particular franchise are attorneys who knew exactly what they were doing. I chalk this chapter or my life up to an expensive education. Caveat Emptor!!
